I do think that the smile thing, which annoys the ever living fuck out of me and totally ruins my day and if anything keeps me from smiling but if I had fangs it would make me bare my teeth at the asshole, is really hard for guys to understand.

Because to them, someone saying “smile” is just annoying. Because they haven’t lived their lives as women, they haven’t been told to suppress their emotions, to do what they can to accommodate men, to adjust their own lives to make men’s lives easier, to fucking wear make-up and do their hair or whatever in order to not offend men with the hideousness of the unadorned female face, to get the coffee when a guy asks for it, to fuck a guy when he wants to, to let a guy touch you without you making a scene in the subway, to fucking give up your life for someone else, to do what you are told at all times.

I’m frightened of any number of things. Socialising, trusting people, being overly dependent, making mistakes, saying or doing embarassing things, cooking properly, cleaning properly, driving, meeting deadlines, being too early, making messes, organising clothes, being hit by cars, heights, disappointing people, not being able to find things, talking about my feelings, being criticised, falling down stairs, being pitied by others, spending time with people i dislike, being crowded, being uninformed, looking unintelligent, admitting weaknesses to people i dislike, being lonely.

Approximately 95% of these are my fears, too.

quite a number of these are also on my list, especially the last four.

“A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on. In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context? One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: if we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?”

Amanda and I will be tearing up the streets of NYC (in the safest way possible) for our second volunteer shift with the awesome organization, RightRides. We’ll be picking up folks in need of a ride between midnight and 4:00 a.m.

RightRides always needs volunteers. The orientation session is really quick, and the shifts are fun and a great way to see the city. Please consider signing-up!

RightRides organizes volunteers to operate a fleet of up to 6 cars that are donated by Zipcar. Driving Teams can only drive women and LGBTQ individuals home.

We started RightRides in 2004 in direct response to an increase in assaults on women walking home by themselves. Our motto is, “Because Getting Home Safely Shouldn’t Be A Luxury” and we recognize that many women and LGBTQ people do not have the extra funds to take a taxi and walking home from public transportation late at night can increase one’s risk of sexual harassment and gender-based assault.

Since 2004, RightRides has driven 2,000 Riders safely home.
You do not need to feel threatened to call RightRides.

I’m a big fan of this organization and am pleased to give them my time. Please consider becoming a volunteer or donating to this important nonprofit.
